In a world filled with records that are far too often recorded with swamping instrumentation and smothering over-production, there's something refreshingly spacious and airy (his recorded songs are often described as sounding unfinished) about much of the music that Robert Wyatt makes, mostly away from it all at his home studio. Time often seems to stand completely still while listening to his records.
Recorded mostly with beautifully effective acoustic instrumentation (Annie Whitehead's trombone playing is at times sublime) this album ebbs and flows with rich harmonic structures and lilting melodies, wrapped around lyrics with depth and sensitivity delivered with typical Wyatt fragility.
After a period of patchiness, Comicopera is perhaps Wyatt's most cohesive collection for some time, and arguably contains some of his best songs in years.
