Long before the term became acceptable,Fates Warning were a progressive metal band. And diehards will be delighted to know that their 1988 album No Exit has now not only been re-issued, but comes complete with bonus tracks and a DVD featuring their faves captured live on the tour that accompanied the album's original release.
However, in any objective sense, while the band's musicianship was - and remains - unquestioned, the thing that the Warning lack is passion, emotion. Listening once again to No Exit brings out both the band's strengths and weaknesses. So, while one can admire the intricate attention to detail on tracks such as Shades Of Heavenly Depth or Silent Cries, ultimately they make little lasting impact. Lots of clever arrangements, little soul.
